There are precedents in history when people had to fight an invisible enemy. However, for the first time such an invisible enemy, Covid-19, has caused the world of seven billion people to be gripped in fear, pain and hope, all at once. Driven by a common goal of stopping the pandemic, major and small pharmaceutical companies, and private and government-sponsored laboratories around the world are intensely searching for a cure.

Despite the extreme scientific spotlight on COVID-19, there are no registered clinical trials involving a therapeutic medical device yet. In this regard, we are proud to announce that Vielight is now moving ahead to investigate our “Vielight RX Plus” PBM device as a possible treatment for COVID-19. This investigation is designed as a randomized controlled study.

This announcement follows last month’s white paper co-authored by Vielight’s Founder & CEO, Dr. Lew Lim. The white paper presented scientifically–based arguments and proposed that the Vielight X-Plus could be a viable option for treating the COVID-19 disease.

“With so much uncertainty and fear in the world today, and with the disease continuing to ravage human lives, our entire team wants to take action in helping to defeat this pandemic. Some of our team members and family members had experienced this sickness. Because it is so infectious, there is a good chance that it will catch up to more of us before too long,” remarked Dr. Lew Lim.

“We needed to know whether we have a therapy to protect ourselves against this disease and to prevent disability or death. Fortunately, Vielight has already developed a device that not only stimulates specific parts of the brain, but also has the capability to stimulate the thymus gland. Why the thymus gland, you may ask. The thymus gland is the site where protective white blood cells (the T-cells) mature and then go on to fight the viruses.

The device is the existing Vielight X Plus. It will be modified into a proposed medical device for treating COVID-19 under the name “Vielight RX Plus”. Until the prospective clinical trial is complete, we hold our breath to see whether clinical evidence supports it as an effective therapy against this deadly virus.

Dr. Nazanin Hosseinkhah, Vielight’s Research Scientist who is managing this research initiative, commented on the trial. “It has been an intense effort by the whole research team over the last 2 months to put together a well-designed study.

The challenge has been the novelty of our approach to deal with the highly transmissive nature of the disease in our research. We had to design a virtual study to mitigate these challenges. We are awaiting the green light from Health Canada and the independent review board (IRB) to proceed with the study.

The study will test a total of 280 subjects. These subjects will be randomized into a standard of care (SOC) group and a SOC plus treatment group. We will be monitoring the groups and measuring how well the RX Plus can help a person with COVID-19 to recover. We are hypothesizing that the RX Plus would help to shorten the disease duration, while improving the immune system’s response.”

Dr. Lim adds, “Once we obtain consent from the regulatory bodies to move forward, we will inform the public on how they can participate in the study. For logistical reasons, our clinical trial will be confined to the province of Ontario, Canada.”

Can CBD help with Coronavirus Cytokine Storm? In inflammatory states (such as coronavirus cytokine storm), CBD (Cannabidiol) in the form of CBD oil can calm inflammation. Moreover, CBD, but not THC, up-regulates the activation of the STAT3 transcription factor, an element of homeostatic mechanism(s) inducing anti-inflammatory events.

CBD may be very effective for covid-19 for several reasons.

Enhancing the endocannabinoid system and regulating ACE2.
Inhibiting inflammatory cytokines. (IL-6, TNFa, NF-kB) promoting IL10 (anti-inflammatory)
Preventing cellular oxidative stress. inhibiting reactive oxygen and reactive nitrosative species. Promoting Glutathione & superoxide dismutase enzyme production.

Inhibits 5HT(1A) stress response influencing the survival and death of WBC, migration and platelet aggregation.

Recent warnings about the use of anti-inflammatory drugs including corticosteroids in common viral disease is appropriate. Inflammation and fever are normal responses that stimulate healing. But in some patients the inflammation cannot be controlled and leads to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) through acute lung injury (ALI). Inflammation reduction is only one aspect of multiple ways that CBD has to limit Covid-19 illness. The World Health Organization has declared that CBD – the relaxant property of cannabis used in medical cannabis – should not be a scheduled drug.

As legalization of cannabis has spread rapidly across the United States, Canada and around the world, health officials have cautioned that we do not have enough research to rule out any down sides.

But today, after months of deliberation and investigation, the WHO has concluded that cannabidiol (CBD) is a useful treatment for epilepsy and palliative care, and does not carry any addiction risks.

While the organization is set to run a fuller review of cannabis next year, assessing all cannabis-related substances, physicians and the cannabis industry have been poised awaiting this decision to deny scheduling for months.

Had the WHO chosen to schedule the drug, it could have hamstrung physicians from prescribing medical cannabis globally.

The WHO has declared medical cannabis is beneficial for cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other diseases, and does not carry an addiction risk.

The report, published today, also recommended imposing the strong restrictions available on fentanyl, a synthetic opioid which has killed thousands of people in America’s drug addiction epidemic.

‘There is increased interest from Member States in the use of cannabis for medical indications including for palliative care,’ the report said.

‘Responding to that interest and increase in use, WHO has in recent years gathered more robust scientific evidence on therapeutic use and side effects of cannabis and cannabis components.’

In conclusion, the authors wrote: ‘Recent evidence from animal and human studies shows that its use could have some therapeutic value for seizures due to epilepsy and related conditions.’

They added that ‘current information does not justify scheduling of cannabidiol’, and declared that taking medical marijuana will not lead to addiction to THC, the psychoactive property of cannabis that induces a ‘high’.

Speaking to Daily Mail Online, Raul Elizalde, the Mexican father who became an unlikely face for cannabis as he fought to get his epileptic daughter treatment, said he was overcome with emotion.

He is responsible for driving the Mexican government to legalize medical cannabis so his first-born daughter Grace, who once suffered hundreds of seizures a day, could access CBD. Now, she suffers a few seizures a day.

‘I’m ecstatic that these international health leaders agree that CBD is a substance that should not be scheduled and has therapeutic value for a variety of medical conditions,’ Elizalde, founder and president of HempMeds Mexico, told Daily Mail Online on Wednesday.

‘We look forward to continuing our conversation about its many benefits in 2018.’

Speaking last month about his family’s experience venturing into the world of medical cannabis, Elizalde admitted he had never considered the medical benefits of a drug which has caused mayhem and agony in his country.

But after medications and surgeries proved futile for Grace, he and his wife, from Monterrey, a conservative and traditional region in the north of Mexico, decided to try CBS.

‘It has changed our life,’ Elizalde told Daily Mail Online.

‘I never thought I would be doing this, that cannabis would be part of our life. But Grace changed everything. Now I know that just taking CBD is like taking a health supplement. It is not a replacement for her treatment, but it has changed her life.’

WHO: Marijuana has therapeutic effects, abuse unlikely

The WHO recently published a report, disclosing evidence from animal and human studies.

“There is increased interest from Member States on the use of cannabis for medical indications including for palliative care. Responding to that interest and increase in use, WHO has in recent years gathered more robust scientific evidence on therapeutic use and side effects of cannabis and cannabis components,” the WHO said.

“To that end, the ECDD [Expert Committee on Drug Dependence] did an initial review of a cannabis compound called cannabidiol (CBD). Recent evidence from animal and human studies shows that its use could have some therapeutic value for seizures due to epilepsy and related conditions,” it added.

It was also disclosed that “cannabidiol is not likely to be abused or create dependence as for other cannabinoids such as Tetra Hydro Cannabinol.”

“The ECDD therefore concluded that current information does not justify scheduling of cannabidiol and postponed a fuller review of cannabidiol preparations to May 2018, when the committee will undertake a comprehensive review of cannabis and cannabis related substances,” it further stated.

The recent statement of the World Health Organization (WHO) has given hope to the advocates of medical cannabis in the Philippines who are pushing for the ‘compassionate use’ of the plant which is more popularly known as marijuana.

After four years of fighting for the legalization of medical cannabis, the Philippine Cannabis Compassion Society (PCCS) said it has found a strong ally when the WHO disclosed that medical cannabis is beneficial to patients with cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other diseases.

“Let us listen and respect the views of the real experts. The WHO has already spoken, acknowledging the benefits of medical cannabis,” said PCCS spoeksperson Dr. Donnabel Cunanan.

Cunanan said they see the WHO as the best “Christmas gift.”

“We hope this information will shed light and end the discussion between patients and decision makers. This is the best Christmas gift to us,” she expressed.

“We understand the role that our legislators play in protecting public interest… [but] the WHO already declared that it is not addictive and it is safe and should be given to patients,” she added.

Medical groups in the Philippines

In the Philippines, House Bill No. 180, or the proposed Philippine Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act, which seeks to legalize medical marijuana, has been passed by the health committee of the House of Representatives.

The WHO report contradicts the statement on Nov. 7 by 16 medical organizations led by Philippine Medical Association and the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila. The statement said: “We strongly oppose medical cannabis legalization since this will expose our citizenry to unnecessary harm and the risk of poor health outcomes.”

Responding to the medical groups’ statement, Isabela Rep. Rodolfo T. Albano III, principal author of the medical cannabis bill, “called on the authors of the statement not to mislead, confuse and alarm the public by making false, unfounded accusations.”

Albano pointed out that “the bill explicitly provides that the Department of Health, in consultation with the Food and Drug Administration, shall be the principal regulatory agency for the use of medical cannabis.

He also suggested that those opposed to the bill “read it carefully, bearing in mind the interest of the thousands of patients suffering from serious and debilitating conditions who will benefit from the legalization of medical cannabis.”

Albano also reminded them of “the people’s right to affordable, accessible, available quality health care through the development of traditional and alternative health care services and its integration into the national health care delivery system.”

Vagus Nerve

Vagus nerve, also called X cranial nerve or 10th cranial nerve, longest and most complex of the cranial nerves. The vagus nerve runs from the brain through the face and thorax to the abdomen. It is a mixed nerve that contains parasympathetic fibres. The vagus nerve has two sensory ganglia (masses of nerve tissue that transmit sensory impulses): the superior and the inferior ganglia. The branches of the superior ganglion innervate the skin in the concha of the ear. The inferior ganglion gives off two branches: the pharyngeal nerve and the superior laryngeal nerve. The recurrent laryngeal nerve branches from the vagus in the lower neck and upper thorax to innervate the muscles of the larynx (voice box). The vagus also gives off cardiac, esophageal, and pulmonary branches. In the abdomen the vagus innervates the greater part of the digestive tract and other abdominal viscera.

The vagus nerve has the most extensive distribution of the cranial nerves. Its pharyngeal and laryngeal branches transmit motor impulses to the pharynx and larynx; its cardiac branches act to slow the rate of heartbeat; its bronchial branch acts to constrict the bronchi; and its esophageal branches control involuntary muscles in the esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas, and small intestine, stimulating peristalsis and gastrointestinal secretions.

Vagus nerve stimulation, in which the nerve is stimulated with pulses of electricity, is sometimes used for patients with epilepsy or depression that is otherwise untreatable; the technique has also been explored for conditions such as Alzheimer disease and migraine.

As an acupuncture detox specialist, I would like to address the alcohol and drug addiction problem in our community with relevant historical information on how it is treated from an acupuncture perspective as a much needed adjunctive natural therapy to the existing solution focused addictions counselling and self help groups (with harm reduction models) that we have now here in Vancouver.

The following information would also explain why acupuncture would be one alternative health service option as an available resource that could be integrated with the already established existing alcohol and drug program or counselling centers. Given the economic and social devastation of the current drug addiction problem here, however, we are perhaps well advised to consider it objectively, with an open mind and without prejudgement. Let me quote a Chinese proverb: “The methods used by one person may be faulty; the methods used by two people will be better.”

Almost 400 detoxification programs in the U.S. and Europe have been modelled after the one at Lincoln Hospital, New York City where psychiatrist Dr. Michael Smith and his staff treat 250 addicts a day with auricular acupuncture. The theory behind that practice holds that the entire body can be affected by stimulating points on the ear. Dr. Smith has observed that withdrawal symptoms and cravings abate within minutes of the treatment. Equally important says Smith, is a reduction in panic and hostility commonly seen in drug-treatment settings — changes that make addicts more amenable to counselling. “We’re not claiming that acupuncture is a magic bullet,” he points out. “We’re claiming it’s valuable in combination with counselling.”

In 1985, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was founded by clinicians who wanted to extend the example of Lincoln Hospital experience into other treatment settings. NADA sets standards of certification for acupuncture detox specialists that are widely accepted in the field of chemical dependency. I am one of the first NADA certified acupuncturists here in B.C. where acupuncture is a legalized primary health care profession.

In the U.S.A., chemical dependency professionals in both the private sector and the criminal justice system have taken a keen interest in the work done at Lincoln Hospital and other NADA affiliated programs. The introduction of an acupuncture component to an existing program provides a cost-efficient method for providing non-residential treatment to large numbers of drug dependent people, while increasing the effectiveness of existing services.

Regardless of the setting, and the substance abused, acupuncture treatment aids in patient detoxification. It does so by supporting the main organs of elimination in the body, speeding the body’s ability to rid itself of toxins.Treatment improves mental clarity and ability to focus. It also provides the patient with a sense of calmness and serenity. This creates a greater receptivity to the counselling process and decreased instances of clients’ “acting out”.

One of the non-criminal-justice speakers at the 1991 NADA conference was Robert Olander, Commissioner of Chemical Health for Hennepine County, Minnesota. He suggested that there have been three “benchmarks” in the history of alcohol and drug treatment in the United States, three things that have revolutionized the way we do alcohol and drug therapy: first was the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935; second was the development of pharmaceuticals in the late 1950s and early ’60s, and the third is acupuncture.

As shown in the epidemic of drug addiction related problems such as increased cases of HIV infections, increased criminal offenses and increased number of mental health dual diagnosis clients, traditional western chemical dependency treatment, unassisted, is a rather bleak landscape. Its proven effectiveness depends most upon clients remaining in treatment for a long time, and yet treatment drop-out is too often the norm. Some long term follow-up studies have found that even lenghty treatment stays ultimately produce low success rates.

There is a saying, “If the only tool you have is a hammer – you tend to treat the world like a nail.”

Help is needed, and acupuncture has much to offer.
