Treating depression, PTSD, anxiety disorders

To experience occasional sadness and anxiety are a normal part of life.

Some people, however, due to stress, cancer, chronic pain, addiction or trauma experience sadness or anxiety in such a manner that it starts disturbing their job performance, school work and even relationships. They have what is called major depression or anxiety disorder.

The symptoms of major depression include lingering sadness or irritability, loss of motivation and zest for living, a pessimistic or worrisome attitude, changes in sleep pattern, changes in appetite and energy level, lower self-worth, poor concentration, forgetfulness, and thoughts of death or suicide.

Anxiety disorders, on the other hand, manifest in palpitations, breathing difficulties, cold sweat, dizziness or light-headedness, body weakness, tremors, digestive system problems, a sense of panic or uneasiness, fears of going crazy, losing control, and being seriously ill.

The treatment package for major depression, cancer, chronic pain, addiction and anxiety disorders includes herbal medication, spiritual healing, stress management techniques, nutritional supplementation, acupuncture, Qigong, and lifestyle changes.

On herbal medication alone, significant improvement is usually seen in two to three weeks of taking the right herbal medication at the right dose. The right herbal medication is one that is natural, effective, non-habit forming, and without side-effects. Cannabis is also used as an aid to psychotherapy and an agent to ease withdrawal from alcohol and opiates.

Medical Cannabis for Depression and Anxiety

Cannabidiol, (CBD), is one of the principal non psycho-active compounds in medical cannabis and has demonstrated both antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects in animal models (de Mello Schier, et al., 2014) and (Zanelati, et al., 2010). Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psycho-active compound in cannabis has also been shown to decrease brain activity in response to negative stimuli (but not positive stimuli) (Bossong, et al., 2013). Cannabichromene (CBC), another compound found in cannabis, has shown to provide significant antidepressant-like effects when administered on its own, as well as when combined with THC (El-Alfy, et al., 2010). In addition, CBC has shown to encourage central neurogenesis, in turn helping prevent the decline of growth in these cells, which is thought to contribute to disorders like depression (Shinjyo & Di Marzo, 2013). For anxiety symptoms, CBD has effects on the limbic and paralimbic areas of the brain. The stimulation of these areas is thought to be responsible for the anxiolytic properties of CBD/THC combination and this combination has shown to significantly decrease subjective anxiety (Crippa, et al., 2011). Moreover, it is reported that the oral use of CBD significantly reduces the anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort associated with public speaking in individuals with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) (Bergamaschi, et al., 2011). The use of CBC can also reduce anxiety and stress levels. Cannabinoids, like CBC, interact with CB1 receptors of the endocannabinoid system, which in turn stimulate the release of GABBA that reduce the excitability of brain cells (Ramikie, et al, 2014).

If the depressive or anxious disorder is associated with insomnia or sleep dysregulation, the psychoactive compound Cannabinol (CBN) can also be useful. Of all the cannabinoids, CBN is the most sedative, making it a potential therapeutic option for those with insomnia, sleep apnea or other sleep disorders. CBN and its derivatives have shown effective at significantly prolonging sleeping time in mice (Yoshida, et al., 1995), (Usami, et al., 1998) and (Takahashi & Karniol, 1975). Research suggests that sleeping improvements are even greater when CBN is combined with THC (Karniol, et al., 1975).

Treating Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with Cannabis

One of the top reasons why many turn to cannabis is stress management. However, for those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), access to this simple green herb can make the difference between drowning in hypervigilance and full engagement with the present. One doctor has seen the transformative powers of cannabis firsthand. Dr. Mike Hart has been successfully treating PTSD with medical cannabis and lifestyle interventions for the past three years.

  • A safer alternative:
Patients with post-traumatic stress disorder can experience an array of debilitating symptoms. From night terrors to hypervigilance, living on the cusp of a chronic fight-or-flight state can make even simple tasks like walking through a crowd overwhelming.
According to the U.S. National Center for PTSD, seven to eight out of every 100 people develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress. Canada has some of the highest rates of PTSD, with an estimated 9.4 percent of the population experiencing some form of the condition.

  • How do CBD and THC treat PTSD?
It’s well-known that cannabis is a powerful painkiller. However, that’s not the only thing the herb can do. Unlike many of the conventional PTSD treatments, which include powerful sedatives, antidepressants, and anti-anxiety medications, at least two different cannabis compounds have been shown to treat PTSD in several unique ways.
The two compounds in question are cannabidiol (CBD), which is a cannabinoid that does not cause the psychoactive “high” that is usually associated with the herb, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the primary psychoactive in cannabis.

  • An herbal approach for PTSD
Dr. Hart also acknowledges that while CBD can be beneficial for sleep, THC is considered a more powerful sedative. After THC treatment, many find that they are less likely to experience nightmares and night terrors, which can significantly disrupt sleep patterns. Poor sleep means potentially worsened symptoms the next day.

  • Cannabis is just one piece of the puzzle
Though cannabis has vast medical potential, it is just one piece of the puzzle. While different cannabinoids can help reduce learned fear and temporarily correct an imbalance in the endocannabinoid system, Dr. Hart has found that the plant is most beneficial when integrated with significant lifestyle changes. The crux of these lifestyle changes is diet and exercise.

A new study finds a connection between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the number of cannabinoid receptors in the brain. These receptors, called CB1, are activated when a person uses cannabis. Researchers at New York University Langone Medical Center used brain imaging techniques to find the connection, Fox News reports. They say their findings could lead the way to new treatments for PTSD.

“There’s not a single pharmacological treatment out there that has been developed specifically for PTSD,” lead author Dr. Alexander Neumeister said in a news release. “That’s a problem. There’s a consensus among clinicians that existing pharmaceutical treatments such as an antidepressant simply do not work.”

The researchers decided to study CB1 receptors because many PTSD patients use cannabis in an attempt to relieve their symptoms, Dr. Neumeister said. Many say cannabis works better for them than legal medications.

The researchers found people with PTSD had higher levels of CB1 receptors in the parts of the brain associated with fear and anxiety, compared with participants without PTSD. They also had lower levels of a brain chemical that binds to CB1. When a person has lower levels of this chemical, anandamide, the brain compensates by increasing the number of CB1 receptors.

Dr. Neumeister said a new PTSD treatment based on their research should not destroy CB1 receptors, because this could lead to depression. Instead, he is working on a treatment that would restore a normal balance of the endocannibinoids in the brains of people with PTSD. Endocannabinoids are substances that activate cannabinoid receptors. He said this compound does not cause health problems seen in people who are chronic cannabis users. He hopes to start clinical trials of the medication soon.

The findings are published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry

Cannabis helps patients forget PTSD night terrors

How in the world can forgetting be a useful thing? Well, it can be very helpful for us to forget traumatic events such as those that cause PTSD. This can be a godsend for patients. The majority of my Veterans with PTSD night terrors sleep through the night and also achieve relief from their night terrors on the first night. Cannabis is a wonderful helper in integrating the memories of our painful past. The painful memories can be emotional as well as almost purely physical. Check out the amazing healing power of whole plant cannabis, and share with someone you love. – Dr. Jake Felice

Medical Cannabis for Chronic Pain

“One of the major benefits of cannabis over pharmaceuticals is that it is not as addictive as most pain and anti-convulsive medication are. Many people cannot handle the very powerful man-made drugs that are generally prescribed for chronic conditions, like fentanyl, oxycontins, morphine and anti-convulsive medication. The side effects of these strong drugs are also cause for concern.

“Synthetic drugs are very expensive, and with our over-burdened health system, cannabis is potentially healing to our pocket-books as well as our bodies. Opiate abuse and addiction is one of the largest problems facing our youth and it doesn’t help to have these prescription drugs an unquestioned component of our health system, while a natural and affordable alternative is available.

“With cannabis, people are often able to get off pharmaceuticals all together, or to substantially reduce the amounts they need.”
